Brooklyn Museum

Over the course of a decade in service at the Brooklyn Museum, as curator leading the oldest and one of the finest collections of the arts of Africa and the Pacific Islands in North America, I built constituencies to acquire over $10 million in art works.

Key Highlights

* Founded the museum's modern and contemporary African art collection
* Established an African Art Council of major supporters
* Led the museum to its largest purchase of a work by an African artist

Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African Art

As curator at the world’s only museum telling the full story of African art, I’ve grown the collection significantly by acquiring over $20 million worth of art while fostering donations that include the museum’s single largest cash gift--dedicated to the purchasing of additional works of art.

Key Highlights

* Launched a major new collecting initiative, The Here Project, dedicated to increasing the representation of LGBTQ+ artists in the collection, growing these holdings by a factor of 10 over a 2-year period.
* Directed and authored museum’s latest Collection Development Strategy, assessing collection strengths/weaknesses, museum’s strategic relationships, and laying out a vision for future collection growth.
* Persuaded leadership to acquire over 500 works (and counting), with the support of 30 donors
* Leveraged a very modest annual federal allocation into multi-million dollar acquisitions in value per year
* Initiated relationships with multiple repeat donors to the collection
* Sold stakeholders on acquiring collection's first works by key artists, including Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Chéri Samba, Bodys Isek Kingelez, Pascale Marthine Tayou, and Wangechi Mutu, among others
